Step back in time and experience Sheffield’s wartime story through the eyes of those who lived it. Our new Blitz exhibition will bring to life the personal experiences of ordinary people during WWII, from the children who played their part to the brave emergency services who risked everything.
Discover how communities came together in the face of devastation and how everyone had a role to play in keeping Sheffield safe. Explore a powerful collection of objects, photographs, documents, uniforms, artwork, and first-hand stories that reveal the resilience, courage, and sacrifice of the city’s people.

Today, the only surviving individuals from WWII were children at the time, and in just a few years, this generation will be lost.
This project preserves their stories and highlights the roles they played, bringing them to life through the new exhibition, online resources, educational workshops, and school visits. Stories like that of Doug Lightning have been digitised, allowing individuals like Doug to share their experiences in their own words through first-hand audio recordings.
