The Art of the Blitz
For Heritage Open Days 2023

Wednesday 13, Thursday 14 and Friday 15 September 2023

Fireman Albert Morley served throughout the London Blitz. He was one of an informal group of firemen artists, both professional and amateur, who captured the drama and destruction of the raids as well as the off-duty life of operational firefighters.

The collective paintings of the London firemen’s artist group attracted Churchill’s attention, and eventually a selection of paintings was chosen by the Royal Academy to tour the US. Few examples of the group’s work has survived although some pieces are in the Imperial War Museum’s collection.

The National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield has acquired ten works by Morley on long-term loan, which together give a rare insight into London’s Blitz history. These are currently not on permanent display as they require cleaning and professional conservation, but will be made available for exclusive public viewing at this special event for Heritage Open Days 2023.

Tickets are free and can be booked in one hour slots at either 11.00 (for entry between 11.00-11.30); 12.00 (entry 12.00-12.30); and 13.00 (entry 13.00-13.30).
